We will at 4:30 AM making the 3 km drive to the starting point. The road up is steep, very steep in parts, and a mix of paved and unpaved.You will be very impressed our car even made it. Family sedan type . From there, it was an hours hike, give or take. It's an easy hike with a clear defined pathway most of the way up. Rocky in parts, paved steps but mostly dirt trail. Hiking shoes are preferred if it is wet, but sneakers are just fine. Once at the summit, you wait a little while for the sun to rise.  It is a breathtaking. You can hike down to the crater and get close to the hydrothermal vents (if you can withstand the sulfur smell!) .

After taking more than enough pictures and taking it all in,you will visit the ghost towns of the neighboring volcano, Mount Sinabung. Sinabung is still an active volcano and you will hear it rumble and see smoke spew out and experience some ash fall if it really decides to become active.
